working the land

That sounds so "official" like, doesn't it?! Like we're some big farmers working our 100 acres of land! hehe Actually, we have 3 1/2 acres and probably at least 2 is woods. We have a decent size front yard, our house sits about 200 ft back from the road, and we have a decent size backyard. The problem? 2 words ~ Georgia clay. Red clay. Nasty, hard as cement in the summer, clay.

I thought the clay in Michigan was bad. Ugh. And when you move into a new house (whether it's "new" or not) there's yard work to be done. Unless, of course, you can afford to buy Martha Stewart's house, which I cannot.

We've basically "maintained" the last 4 years, planting a tree here and a shrub there. But see this big red backyard?
Yeah, that's in some serious need of some sod. But, you can only do so much. I have many plans for this yard. But since I haven't won the lotto yet (I've heard you actually have to play to win) we have to space things out. Add in multiple trips (and stays) at the hospital in the last 4 years for 3 out of 4 members of your family and you find that your wallet is a wee bit lighter!

Anyhoo, back to the yard...it's starting to look soo much better already
And see these planter boxes?
My hubby made those for me a couple years ago. I'm going to put those along that spot I just showed you. I need him to build me 2 more. I'm going to try to do square foot gardening. I saw a photo on Jen's blog and I really like the idea of sectioning off areas for different plants. And see where that line is in the grass?
We're hoping for a small patio there. Still waiting on the concrete guy to swing by and give an estimate. We're trying to figure out if it's cheaper to do that or pavers. We found really cheap ones but by the time you add in all the other junk it gets pretty costly.

And then there's the front yard
It's going to be sooo much easier to plant some small shrubs & perennials in that area now that the ground is broken up. Of course, that'll be after I mix in some good dirt.

And this little girl, she's my buddy. She looooves to be outside!
So that's what's going on in our neck of the woods...in between baseball practice, games, dance classes, gymnastics and hitting the gym! Oh, and my sewing classes. I've been a sewing maniac!! I'll share that soon, too :)

Wow, looks like a big project!!! My brother introduced us to square foot gardening when we didn't have a backyard and it's great. We grew so many things and it was so easy to weed and maintain. Good luck with it!
