Twas the night of Thanksgiving,
And I just couldn't sleep.
I tried counting backwards,
I tried counting sheep.

The leftovers beckoned
The dark meat and white,
But I fought the temptation
With all of my might.

Tossing and turning with anticipation,
The thought of a snack became infatuation.
So I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door,
And gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore.
Gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes,
Pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes.

I felt myself swelling, so plump and so round,
'Til all of a sudden, I rose off the ground.
I crashed through the celiing, floating into the sky,
With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie.
But I managed to yell as I soared past the trees,
Happy eating to all - pass the cranberries please!

Delightful Decorations

This is one of the cards that I worked on a couple weeks back. I've been waiting to play with this new stamp set (Delightful Decorations) for a while. When I originally ordered it I mistakenly ordered the spanish version. Aaaarrgghhh.... So I had to wait to send it back and get a new one. But I love that there's a matching punch for this set. Makes things a whoooole lot easier.

Other supplies used: Jillibean Soup papers, Martha Stewart punch

I used the snowflake embossing folder along with some baker's twine. And don't forget the stickles to make the snowflakes sparkle and some green crystals!

SO worth the wait!

So it's been a while since I've posted anything scrappy related...for obvious reasons. I worked on a few Christmasy things before Olivia got sick so I thought I'd share a few.

First, I started playing with some Christmas tags using plain 'ol shipping tags that you can get at any office supply store. The ones I used measure 4 3/4"x2 3/8" so they're a good size for using on a present, gift bag or even on the front of a card.

I ran them through my Sizzix with the Snowflakes embossing folder and then distressed the edges and added some Christmas accents. The red felt snowflakes were actually a big roll of felt ribbon that I found at Target. I stamped the Christmas trees on white cardstock, cut them out, mounted them with pop dots and added some green crystals. Add some red & white baker's twine and you're all set!

Here's something else I came up with, again using my Sizzix machine. This time I used a Christmas tree die to cut some trees out of corrugated cardboard as a fun holiday accent.

I used one of these trees last year to decorate the front of my December Daily album:

I just added some buttons & string and you have a cute embellishment for albums, scrapbook pages, cards, etc.

After 8 days of no sleep, worrying about my baby, eating cafeteria food, and hearing alarms go off all day and night. I can't wait to sleep in my own bed! And I know Olivia's so glad to be home, too. She's not totally healed yet but we're getting there. The home health nurse came today to show me how to do her IV antibiotics which she'll be on for another week and a half. She still keeps getting occasional fevers so we have to continue to watch her and if things haven't improved (or God forbid get worse) we'll be going back up to Atlanta. I have been so immensely thankful for all of the prayers. Please continue to pray that her poor lung gets better.

I thought I'd share a few photos of our eventful week :) Here's her first night in the hospital here in town. Notice the red cheeks from her fever that kept spiking.

Poor girl, they had to poke her 3 times before getting the IV in cause her veins were just shot from being sick :( They gave her that little pink bear after getting her IV in.

The next day when the xrays & bloodwork came back worse, we took our first trip in an ambulance to Atlanta. That perked her up a bit!

Finally starting to feel a little bit better...

I have to say that everyone at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta were wonderful. They really made our stay much more tolerable. There were DVDs & books that we could "rent" for free, there were girls that came by daily with an art cart. When Olivia started feeling better she did a few arts & crafts with them. It was such a great hospital. I've been in several hospitals myself and this one was, by far, the best one.

And now Olivia has many stories to tell her friends....about her ambulance ride, her stay at the hospital, her many needle pokes, xrays and the CAT scan that she thought was pretty neat :)

I'm hoping to be back tomorrow with some scrappy stuff. It's been a while since I've posted that kind of stuff!! I worked on some Christmas things before Olivia got sick so I'll share those this week.

Well, it turned out that Olivia didn't need surgery. Her right lung is still pretty sick but she's slowly but surely getting better. Thankfully they were able to put in a PICC line so she hasn't had to get poked anymore (which she loves, let me tell ya!) It is looking like she might be able to come home tomorrow as long as they can get some home care set up for her. She'll be on IV antibiotics for probably another 2 weeks. It is still amazing to me that this all was a secondary infection from having the flu. It's common to get pneumonia (or "yamonia" as Olivia calls it!) from the flu but not quite this serious. We're still waiting for the results of her xray today so we're hoping it's a little better.

Thank you so much for your prayers. As worried as I was this week, the other families in this hospital were never far from my mind. A lot of families who won't have such an "easy" outcome. Please pray for them. It is so difficult to see your child in pain.

I have been SO uplifted by all of your prayers for my daughter. It's truly amazing just how many people are praying for her. We originally thought she'd be going into surgery today but the drs have decided to hold off for at least another day to see if the antibiotics can do their magic. Now that we've gotten some bloodwork back we know just what kind of bacteria it is and they've changed her meds so I'm praying that this might do the trick. However, the surgeons still may decide to take her in for surgery this weekend. As you can imagine I'm feverently praying that this will not happen. Please continue to pray for Olivia. Your prayers are working!!!

I mentioned in my last post that we were at the ER on Sunday morning with my daughter. Yesterday we went and had another xray done and it showed no improvement so she was admitted to the hospital. Well, xrays this morning showed that it is actually getting worse and is now in her left lung as well. So she's being transferred up to Atlanta.

I'm humbly asking for your prayers right now.

months since I've posted a layout? Really?? Holy cow, it's been a long time since I've gone that long without scrapping a layout. I guess I've been busy with holidays, fried computers, and other projects. Well, it's back to basics...for now at least. Next week is a whole 'nother subject. I've been stuck at home since Tuesday afternoon with a sickling. So in between fetching Tylenol, Motrin, Vernors, kleenex, rubbing shoulders & holding hair during puk....well, you get the picture...I managed to get a little scrappin' in.

Pumpkin Carving 101
Let's face it, sometimes scrapping the holidays can get tiresome because it seems like you're doing the same thing every year. So instead of "traditional" journaling, I opted to put some little notes on each photo (in Photoshop) and that was, in essence, was my journaling. No more had to be said!

another successful year

It was another great Halloween this year. The weather was a lot colder and rainier than normal but my kids didn't seem to care one bit. It actually reminded me a lot of my Halloween's trick or treating as a kid. Usually you had to figure out how to put your winter coat under your costume! But back then a lot of the costumes were plastic so it wasn't much of a problem. Not the full suit costumes that they make today.

We started off the day by carving our pumpkins. Yes, I waited til Halloween to do this. I told you the entire month zipped by for me!

The kids drew the faces that they wanted and even helped a bit with the carving. Of course, pumpkin carving wouldn't be complete without daddy acting like he's going to shove a handful of pumpkin guts into someone's face!

Even the dogs waited patiently for a pumpkin seed to fall...

Yes, I know that's a Christmas tablecloth. But it was the only plastic one I had handy! And here's the finished results...

I think the colored light inside the mummy makes him look even spookier, don't you??

And then, out of nowhere, a Jedi Knight fight broke out in the kitchen...

Not sure who won that battle, I'll have to let you know. But just be warned, Ben doesn't fight fair. He aims right for the.....well, you can figure that one out!

And then it was time for trick or treating. It was a Star Wars Halloween at this house. A Storm Trooper and Padme.

The serious face adds to overall look of the costume, don't you think?!

Now I didn't dress up, but I couldn't go out with at least doing something.

I even put on pink eyelashes. I don't know how women wear those things...

At the end of the evening the kids were soaked. I told you it was raining!

But it was all worth it when they got to dump their buckets out and relish in their successful night of trick or treating!

Ok, is that my dog licking the carpet in the background?? God that dog is weird sometimes!

there are costumes, accessories, make-up, etc laying all over the house

the kitchen looks like a cyclone blew through it....then came through a second time and left bits of candy corn and spider legs all over the countertops

the mother of the house (aka ME) is staying up late getting treat bags ready for the kids' classes

last minute prep for classroom parties are going on, lists are being made, and momma is wondering how she's going to get all of this stuff into school tomorrow while climbing through hallways of kids in the morning rush

kids are finding it hard to sleep because they are so excited for all of the Halloween fun!

Yes, it's been busy around here. I've made 20 spider cupcakes, 20 pretzel skeleton fingers, 18 treat bags, scarecrow crunch, Halloween punch, supplies for scarecrow cookies, yadda yadda yadda.

And because I can't do a post without a photo.....and I love sharing Halloween treats, I'll share a few of my goodies that I made this week.

These little guys were veeeery time consuming (20 cupcakes = 160 spider legs) but I think you can see they were worth it. Got the idea here. I couldn't find truffles so I used mini Reeses cups instead. And the eyes were some Wilton confetti sprinkles I had in the cabinet already.

Just an FYI, if you make these keep the legs refrigerated before assembling. That way the chocolate stays stiff and they won't fall apart. I only had 3 leg casualties :) hehe

I also made these cute skeleton fingers

Again, if you have to make a lot they can be very time consuming. Ideally I would buy multiple molds and that way you could crank out a bunch at once. But I'm cheap and only bought one! And I used one of those squeeze bottles for the chocolate. That made things go a lot easier. But a hint...don't try to melt the chocolate in the bottle (by holding it in a bowl of hot water) as the directions say on the back. It takes fooooorrreverr. I melted mine like normal and then put it in the bottle.

Well, it's 4 days until Halloween. Can you believe it?!! I certainly can't. Somehow I lost the month of October...not sure how. Remember that pretty fall looking material I showed in a previous post? Well, I made some fall tote bags with that pretty fabric. And oh how I love it :)

I've had a lot of fun making these tote bags. I made 2 large ones and, of course a mini-tote.

I made those cute flower using this Heather Bailey tutorial. I just didn't layer mine cause I found those cute buttons. I really like these bags because they're perfect for throwing a few things in and running out the door. And, of course, I will have my bags in my etsy shop soon. Still trying to finish up Halloween projects so it may take me a day or 2 to get them up.

And speaking of my etsy shop, right now all Halloween items ship for free. I have one more of the Halloween wall hanging kits left along with some embellishment sets.

Once those are gone I'll be switching over the Christmas. Can you believe it's coming in less than 2 months?!! The link to my shop is on the right ------------>>>>>

Happy Saturday :) I've been busying sewing a bunch of fall tote bags but I thought I'd drop in really quick and share a cute little Halloween card I made the other day.

I used a Sizzix scallop square die for the front along with some Halloween papers & Home is Where the Haunt Is stamp set (Stampin' Up). I used my circle & scallop circle Nestibilities for the haunted house and I used a pop dot for the moon to make it stand out a bit.

At first I used a smaller circle punch for the moon but then realized I liked it better with a little white around the edge.

And that's it! Hope you're all having a wonderful fall weekend!

I've had a sewing machine for about 5 yrs. I had every intention of learning how to sew. And then I just never got around to it. I've made a few little projects here and there but nothing major. I guess the sewing "bug" just hadn't hit me yet. What's funny is that I ended up using my sewing machine more for scrapbooking than sewing projects!

But lately I've been a sewing fool. I made a few little tote bags out of this material that was just screaming for me to buy!

This one is pretty basic. Cute pink, flower & paislee pattern on the outside & a coordinating black pattern on the inside. And what's cool is that the bags are reversible :) The pattern on the handles is the inside pattern, too.

Pink ribbon tied in a bow to finish it off. This next one is my favorite...

Those flowers were just calling to me in the store. Aren't they fun?!

And here's a cute little mini tote bag. It measures about 9x9. I'm thinking it'd be really cute to put an altered notepad and some personalized notecards for teacher gifts. Yes, thinking ahead to Christmas.

Instead of the sewn handles I thought it'd be fun to use black & white polka dot ribbon. This size would also be perfect for a little girl's purse :)

And next? Well, this fabric was also screaming at me in the store...

Now, if you have small kids I'm sure you have multiple bottles of hand sanitizer around the house like I do. But there's no reason they can't be dressed up for the holidays just like everything else, right?!

I found these bottles of Target brand hand sanitizer last week and remembered how Virginia had decorated some for teacher gifts earlier this year. And with the orange caps they're perfect for Halloween!

I used some of my leftover scraps of My Mind's Eye Boo To You papers & cut-outs, some ribbon and Voila! Cutie patootie hand sanitizer bottles :) And don't forget to decorate the back, too. These would also make great teacher gifts.

(By the way, if you're wanting to make these with the Target bottles, the measurement for the front and back is 2 1/8" x 3 1/8".)

Keep your fingers crossed for me...having internet & cable issues again. So far it's working again but we'll see...technology, such a pain sometimes!!

I've seen this on other blogs so I thought I'd do it myself...cause I'm such a copycat! hehe

Outside my window...the sun is shining but it's still pretty chilly. The leaves have just a hint of fall color. There's a bird that keeps flying onto the inside ledge of my back porch. The same one that built a nest there last year?? Not sure.

I am thinking... about everything that needs to be accomplished this month.

I am thankful for...my children who show me the meaning of God's love every single day but especially on Sunday's when we go to church and I see how much they truly love the Lord.

From the kitchen...leftover ham from the crock pot and homemade oven fries.

I am wearing...black pants and a comfy creme colored sweater.

I am creating...some Halloween & Christmas projects and hoping to start my December Daily soon.

I am going...to try and catch up on some of the shows I missed while the cable was out. Hoping to do that when the kids go to bed tonight.

I am reading...The Vampire Diaries. I thought I'd read it since I started watching the show. So far the show is much better than the book.

I am hoping...to finish up some Halloween projects and start my December Daily soon. I am also hoping to finish up all of my Christmas projects before December 1st. I am also hoping that I get my computer repaired soon.

I am hearing...a movie playing and my wind chimes outside my back door.

Around the house...we are just "hanging out"...something we do after coming home from church and eating lunch.

One of my favorite things...in the last couple days ~ hot chocolate.

A few plans for the rest of the week...some together time with the kiddos, getting ready for Halloween including treat bags for school, parties, & costumes.

bring on the fall weather

Today was my favorite kind of day. What I remember as a "typical" fall day when I was a kid. Something I don't get as much of in October since moving to the south. I knew it was cold out when I woke up this morning and heard the furnace kick on. I knew it was going to get in the 40s last night so I was sure to set it before I went to bed just in case. Didn't want to wake up to a freezing house!!

And we got to kick off the chilly weather with a good 'ol fire in the fireplace.

Oh how I love to have a fire going on a chilly day. We had multiple cups of hot chocolate, stayed in our pj's for most of the day, cooked a ham in the crock pot and enjoyed this wonderful fall day.

Unfortunately it probably won't last long. I just looked at the forecast for next week and we'll be getting back in the 70s. Hopefully a cold front will move in and push that warm air away. Fall is my favorite time of year and I want it to stay!!!

FINALLY I have my internet and cable back!!! And do you know what it was?? What I waited 8 days to have fixed??? A splitter on the back of my cable box. That's what was messing up all the lines in the house and left me without internet and most of my channels. If I'd known that I could've gone to the store and bought one myself!!! Oh well, lesson learned I guess.

I actually learned several lessons this week...

I learned that there is a difference between a power strip and a surge suppressor.

And even if you do have your electronics plugged into a surge suppressor it won't matter when lightening strikes if said surge suppressor isn't turned off.

Back-up, back-up, BACK-UP your info on your computer. Even though my computer was dead we my hubby was able to get the info off of my hard drive (thank you Lord, it wasn't fried).

I can live without internet and cable but it's very hard to determine what to wear when we're in fall weather and I have no idea what the weather's going to be like (cause I couldn't look it up or watch the news!)

It's really a pain when your garage door won't open....I'm sure we look funny coming out the front door with our trash....and letting our dogs out the front door to go potty on the front lawn! hehe Hey, you gotta do what you gotta do!! Not sure when we'll be getting that fixed, it's pretty much fried and we have to get a new one.

I think that's enough of the lessons. I'll leave you with some fall decorations from around our house...

This guy has been on my front door every fall for years. Isn't he cute?!

It is really hard to get a good picture in my kitchen because it mostly gets indirect light. Plus I have no photoshop to edit it (using the old computer!)

During the fall you will always find this candy jar on my kitchen counter, usually filled with Halloween M&M's. I think it's about time to refill it!

And I always have a pumpkin spice candle burning (or something similar). It's just not fall without the smell of pumpkin in the air! I found this one at the Yankee Candle store this year. My 2 favorite scents ~ pumpkin pie and vanilla cupcake....mmmm.... And let me tell ya, it's smells goooood!!!

for my internet, cable, computer...

We found out that my computer is still under warranty because it's only 5 mos old. The bad news is that I couldn't find my receipt but the good news is that they said I could use the info on the canceled check to look it up. HUGE relief. But the bad news again is that my computer will be gone for up to 3 weeks. So we've hooked up my ancient computer that's 8 yrs old and bought a new modem so at least when the cable company comes out on Thursday to fix the internet & cable I can at least get back online. Garage door opener is still broke and probably will be for a while. Such a pain.

Oh, and did you know that all power strips are not surge suppressors?? I didn't either. We were just at Lowes (looking for replacement parts for the garage door opener of course) and decided to buy a new surge suppressor...since I'm sure the other one got a big jolt from the lightening. And in looking at all of them I noticed that the cheaper ones only said "power strip" and not "surge suppressor". Made me think.

So we ended up buying the monster surge suppressor that even the cable lines can plug into!

Hopefully I should be back on Thursday with lots of scrappy stuff to share!!! Cross your fingers for me :)

I'll admit that you are very pretty to look at. The way you streak across the sky is absolutely amazing. And as pretty as you are to look at, I really don't appreciate the havoc that you've wreaked on my home. For example, was it really necessary to knock out my computer and modem?? Did I mention that my computer is only 5 mos old?? Just a baby. She didn't deserve that. And what's with blowing out my cable and internet, too?? You know how I can't live without the internet. I appreciate not being able to watch Vampire Diaries & Supernatural last night. Staring at the ceiling was a much better use of my time. And I guess knocking out my garage door opener was just icing on the cake, wasn't it??

Well, you and me aren't on speaking terms anymore. I'm sorry, but that's just how it's got to be.

Sorry I'm late posting this guys. It's been a day of running here, running there, grab something quick to eat, running here....you get the idea! I had my first sewing class today. So much fun! We're making a bag next week so if it's presentable I'll be sure to share it. I know my way around a sewing machine a little bit but I've never had any "formal" training. After learning that I'd be making some pj bottoms, my kids commissioned me to make all of their pjs. I think the first order is for Star Wars pjs :)

ottoman makeover

For the last 3 1/2 yrs we've had this big, clunky coffee table in our living room. This is a picture I took in Feb '06

I bought it shortly after we moved into this house. I figured it'd be ok to buy a big coffee table cause my couch is one of those big, oversized mammoths (but it's oh~so~comfy) Truth is, I was simply happy to even have the room for a coffee table. In my last 2 houses the living room just wasn't the right size for one. So I bought this table. It wasn't my favorite. Not my first choice. Honestly it isn't even my "style". But I was impatient and bought it anyway. But let me tell you why I don't like it.

It's too big

It's too dark

My kids have banged the crap out of it

It has become the magazine/remote/mail/magazine/all around junk collector

I don't like it

But....there's no money in the budget for a new one right now. And quite honestly, my kids will just ruin a new one anyway. And since I'm not in the habit of flushing my money down the toilet (when I can help it) I had another idea. We've had a cedar chest in our bedroom which has turned into the "clean clothes holder". I'm sure you have one of those in your bedroom, too. It serves no real function. My husband actually made it in high school. So I had the idea of putting it in the living room and making some kind of cushion to go on top of it.

I found some clearance fabric at Joann's. It was regularly priced at $40/yd and I got it for $9/yd. I also bought this same fabric for my window mistreatments that I did in the kitchen (I'll show those later this week when they're finished). This is how it turned out:

I am so happy with how it turned out. I originally picked a darker fabric (thinking about durability with 2 kids) but the lighter fabric simply looked nicer with the darker wood on the cedar chest. Here's some close ups:

I found that cute little tray on sale at Joann's for $10

I used a 40% off coupon at Hobby Lobby to get the padding and doubled it up. To cover it, I simply wrapped the material around it like a present and adhered it with Unique Stitch.

It seems to have a good hold but we'll see how long it lasts. I just didn't feel like pulling out my hot glue gun. And since no one is going to see the bottom it really doesn't matter.

I also added one of those rug grippers underneath to keep it from slipping too much. I was thinking it'd be nice to paint the cedar chest white and then distress the edges but I'll save that project for another day.

And that big, clunky coffee table?? Well that's sitting in the back of our truck waiting for a trip to Goodwill. Someone will enjoy it....just not me. And ya know what? My kids don't really miss their play table/toy collector. It's working out really well...and we have more floor space to play :)
